Man-Modified Plants are seen all across the City grown in pots and on the streets. The Plants are made by Humans to purify the city's air and now are being cared for by the Robots.
Distribution[]

Plants can be found all over Walled City 99, in inhabited areas and in the Dead City. They are developed by Neco corp., and are distributed throughout the city ever since. In the Slums, you can see an old advertisement for such plants.
Clementine taught the Antvillage inhabitants how to grow Man-Modified Plants because they live in the Sewers and could not get out to learn about some of the technologies available in the Slums and Midtown.
Description[]
Man-Modified Plants are trees, grass, weeds, flowers and mosses. The names of City plants are not mentioned in the game and game files, except Chroma green.
All plants are modified ordinary plants, so their species are not much different. The only difference is the possibility of growth without a lot of light, only with a small amount of water. They don't always get special care, growing uncontrollably in abandoned areas. Soil is not needed to grow such plants, sometimes in the game you can find trees that grow without soil directly on buildings.
Uses[]
Man-Modified Plants are used mostly for decoration because Companions doesn't need air to live. They use growing plants as a hobby, collect them, grow and take care of them. The cultivation of plants is one of the evidences of the loyalty of Companions to Humans. They continue to take care of plants even after all humans died.
Roshee takes care of some plants in the Slums, Malo in the Antvillage and Helpers in the Control Room Area. The Companions do this to preserve the human heritage, and the Helpers do it because they are programmed to take care of all organic lifeforms in the City.
You can get a Plant Badge if you help Malo to collect three plants of different colors that grow in the Antvillage: Yellow Plant, Purple Plant and Red Plant.
The tree in Elliot's apartment contains a memory:
This tree is a scientific marvel. It's remarkable that human ingenuity found a way to create plants that thrive without sunlight. Organic life requires trees to purify the city's air. Robots don't need it, but take care of them anyway. It's what the humans would have wanted.
