The cat is a stray ginger tabby cat and the protagonist of Stray that the player controls. Being separated from its family, its goal is to escape the Walled City 99 with the help of B-12.
Some players have nicknamed this cat "Ginger", after the host of “Be Gone-an Open Stray MAP” called it that in the description.[1] The cat doesn't have a name, but the closest the cat ever gets to having a name is “little one" by the Companions. Inspired by Murtaugh, the cat of BlueTwelve Studio's co-founders, he is quickly becoming a video game hit.
Throughout Stray
The ginger was born outside the Walled City. He took shelter with his family Inside the Wall of the city, where he could sleep, hunt and play. One day while exploring the territory, the cat slipped while jumping onto a broken pipe, triggering the events of the game. Having fallen, the only path he could take was into the depths of the mysterious cybercity, in hopes of finding a way out.
In the game, he is assisted by a drone that prompts the cat and communicates with the residents of the City by translating their language. The entire game is seen from a cats perspective - this allows for unique movement mechanics, and allows for cat-like interactions with objects and characters, like knocking over a paint tin, scratching a door to enter, or simply taking a nap.
Cat Family

The cat has a family or group (officially, in the description of the game, it is called a family). These are the three other cats at the start of the game. Their colors are orange with white spots, white with orange spots and black. The cat's family is only seen in Chapter 1: Inside the Wall.
Appearance
He appears to be a ginger tabby cat with green eyes. He has darker orange stripes, modeled after Murtaugh. Later in the game, the cat is seen wearing a backpack, which is black with a white trim, or multi-colored if every Memory is collected in-game. Badges can also be collected and will show on the side of the backpack. The cats backpack has a compartment for his drone friend B-12.
Voice

Lala, the voice actor
During the game, the cat will meow when he wants to, during certain cutscenes, or if the player presses the meow button. The cat in Stray was voiced by the cat Lala.

Trivia

Murtaugh
- One of the reasons why Stray gained popularity is due to this cat being the player character.
- The cat's gender is mentioned in very few places in the English localization: only in the dialog of Jonee and Rozey. His gender is male. The entire back part of the cat has been edited to keep the game a 10+ rating - however, in the game files you can see an animation called "CAT_LICKINGBALLS.uasset". [2]
- The cat in Stray was inspired by a pet belonging to Koola and Viv, BlueTwelve's co-founders. He goes by the name Murtaugh and is nicknamed "The Boss" by those who love him. Found as an actual stray in Montpellier, France, he has a home, a family, and a place in gaming history.
- The other two cats who helped in the creation of this character are Oscar (motion) and Lala (voice actor).
