B-12 is a robot Drone that is befriended by the Cat in Chapter 3: The Flat. The box in which B-12 was revealed that its model is WT 36K-129.

Background

Initially encountered as a disembodied voice within the flat, the Cat aids it in acquiring a body, B-12 is the consciousness of a human scientist that attempted to upload his consciousness to the city's network. This upload was partially successful; however, the scientist's memories of who he was became corrupted as the process did not complete successfully, with his only memory being that he has to go outside and he was with a Scientist before humans departed from the city. As means towards leaving the city, B-12 allies with the Cat, providing him a harness and means of lighting paths, interacting with robots, items and complex technologies such as keypads and the Defluxor.

As the Cat and B-12 journey to the outside, B-12 will gradually recover his missing Memories.

Plot and Ending spoilers ->
Upon reaching Antvillage will remember that he is the scientist from the memories he was recalling. This realization instills a need for contemplation and B-12 would not engage with anyone while coming to terms with this new reality and how it feeds into his objective.

Following the acquisition of the Atomic Battery and entering the nightclub's VIP lounge to meet Clementine, B-12 and the Cat are separated in the Jail. As the Cat attempts to make an escape with Clementine, he refuses to leave B-12 behind and although unable to communicate directly with Clementine, manages to gain the robot's aid in rescuing B-12.

Upon reaching the Control Room and the computing systems that impede the opening of the city, B-12 realizes that he will not be able to leave with the Cat due to the damage to his body, but would be able to take control of the city, lifting the lockdown and opening the city to the wider world once more.

As the ending cutscene plays out and the Cat disappears over the horizon, a monitor to the left amidst the foliage flickers to life, accompanied by an electronic buzz. This is perhaps an indication that B-12 may have transferred his consciousness to the City's network, as in the beginning of the game albeit with more access and control than before; this would perhaps leave B-12 unable to leave the City but still very much alive, able to watch over the Companions, and perhaps even able to catch glimpses of the Cat.

Collectables and Achievements

  • Important collectibles for B-12 are Memories, obtaining all of which will prompt B-12 to give the Cat a shiny alternate harness.
  • Receive the silver Not Alone trophy when meeting the drone in the Flat.
  • Receive the bronze Cat Got Your Tongue? trophy when B-12 translates a robot's speech for the first time. After reaching Chapter 4: The Slums, the Cat must talk to the Guardian, so the trophy can't be missed.

B-12's box texture

  • B-12's name is a reference to the developers, BlueTwelve Studio.
  • B-12's box calls him a "Drone Companion" - so Drones may be a subtype of Companion, rather than a separate kind of robot. Alternatively, the WT 36K-129 model may simply be a drone created to serve as (the body of) a Companion.
  • The name B-12 comes from the company "B-12 Robotics" that manufactured the drone (see the box texture shown to the right).
  • There are droid letters on B-12's body, which means that some Companion used the drone before.

Dialog

B-12 is the character with the most dialog in Stray, but it mostly falls into a few categories. For brevity and relevance, it is transcribed in those places, rather than here.

  • Translating Companions' speech - this is considered dialogue for the individual companions, and is listed on their pages.
  • Translating writing - B-12 can occasionally be asked to read or translate some writing in-game.
  • Memories - Some of these are triggered simply by entering an area where B-12 sees something, others require interaction to activate.
  • Examining inventory items - B-12 will provide help and advice on almost any inventory item you can find in the game.
  • Help on quest status - B-12 can be asked for advice on quest progress at almost any time.
  • B-12 Dialog - The remainder of B-12's dialog has its own page, because there's still a lot of it.
